How do you define our region?  Is it the "five core" counties? Is it the ARC 10?  Is it the MSA 28?  How the region is defined largely depends upon the need for the definition.  The following table will provide you with some of the most commonly used regional definitions.

  Regional Development Center - Designated by State law to be the area-wide planning agency for all federal and state programs which require or encourage area wide planning. There are 16 RDCs in Georgia.  The RDC for the Atlanta area is called the Atlanta Regional Commission. RDC 10 Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb Douglas, Fayette, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, and Rockdale.
  The Atlanta Regional Commission is the regional planning and intergovernmental coordination agency for city of Atlanta and the ten county area surrounding Atlanta ARC 10 Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb Douglas, Fayette, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, and Rockdale.
  Workforce Development Area - A seven-county area crated by agreement of county chief-elected officials, administered by the ARC and funded for training and employment activities under the federal Workforce Investment Act. The Atlanta Regional Workforce Board is responsible for providing policy guidance for the Workforce Investment Service Area as designated by the Governor.

 

WFD 7 Cherokee, Clayton, Douglas, Fayette, Gwinnett, Henry and Rockdale
  Metropolitan Planning Organization - A federally designated area for regional transportation planning to meet air quality standards and for programming projects to implement the adopted Regional Transportation Plan. The area includes the 10-county Regional Development Center (ARC) and eight additional counties.  The area takes into consideration both the current urbanized areas as well as areas forecast to become urbanized through the year 2030.

 

MPO 18 All of Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry and Rockdale, and parts of Barrow, Bartow, Newton, Spalding and Walton.
  Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District MNWPD 15 Bartow, Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth Fulton, Gwinnett, Hall, Henry, Paulding and Rockdale.
  Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area In the past the U.S. Office of Management and Budget defined the Atlanta Metropolitan area as a 20 county region for census purposes. This twenty county area has been replaced by the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta Metropolitan Statistical Area which includes 28 Georgia counties

  Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta Metropolitan Statistical Area- The U.S. Office of Management and Budget defines certain geographic entities, including Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA), for use by Federal statistical agencies (including the U.S. Census Bureau) in collecting, tabulating, and publishing Federal statistics.  The Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta MSAs describes the region’s core areas of population together with the adjacent communities which display a high degree of economic and social integration, particularly illustrated by high rates of commuting from the adjacent areas to job locations in the cores.

  Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Gainesville Combined Statistical Area CSA 33 Barrow, Bartow, Butts, Carroll, Chambers (AL) Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, Dawson, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Hall, Haralson, Heard, Henry, Jasper, Lamar, Meriwether, Newton, Paulding, Pickens, Pike, Polk, Rockdale, Spalding, Troup, Upson and Walton

 

  13-County Area - Refers to the  former clean air  non-attainment area under the EPA's one-hour ozone standard in place until 2005.  The one hour standard has been revoked and replaced with a new eight-hour nonattainment standard since 2005

 

  13 Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Paulding and Rockdale
  20-County Area - The current Non-Attainment area for the EPA's eight hour ozone and particulate matter standards.   20
